Parental Leave Policy for Grad Students

It's hard enough to be a graduate student without adding pregnancy to the mix!

The Student Affairs Committee is currently working on a leave policy for pregnant female graduate students. The policy currently states: while “medically necessary” during and following pregnancy, female graduate students will maintain scholarship status, return to previous academic and extracurricular standing, and be provided accommodations by professors and supervisors.

The Senate discussed some potential changes and clarifications. We suggested...

  • Inclusion of paternal leave

  • Making the policy trans inclusive (not specifying female grad students)

  • A minimum granted leave of absence (1 semester)

  • Leave prior to childbirth

  • Leave for adoptive parents

Now we want to hear from you! What else do you think needs to be included or clarified in this policy? If you have comments, questions, or concerns, please comment here or contact your department’s senator! If you’re not sure who your senator is, click here to find out!
